SUN – JAN 8 – ST. JOHNS RIVERSHIP “BARBARA LEE” LUNCH CRUISE  – Sanford

Activity Level: 2

A century ago, the St. Johns River was Florida’s first great inland highway connecting the ocean port of Jacksonville with the still-wild interior.  The River ship Barbara-Lee takes you back to a more adventurous, more romantic time.  The River ship Barbara-Lee is an authentic sternwheeler paddleboat. The steel hull is propelled by two paddlewheels at the rear of the vessel. The wheels can turn forward or backward independently of each other, allowing the ship to maneuver easily in very tight quarters. The ship has five decks: An open-air top deck, a covered open-air “paddlewheel deck” overlooking the wheels, an enclosed upper deck that seats 60 diners with its own dance floor, a mezzanine deck that seats 40 and the large main salon deck that seats 84 with its stage, dance floor and bar.  The enclosed dining areas are climate controlled with air conditioning and heating.

In addition to the open upper deck with benches and railings, the covered paddlewheel deck at the rear of the second level allows guests to stay out of the sun while getting an unobstructed view of the river and its wildlife.

Lunch menu: Entrees vary from time to time, but these are the caliber of entrees you can expect.

Entrées are chef-prepared to your liking and served with side salad, freshly baked rolls, chef’s choice vegetables and dessert.

  • Prime Rib

USDA choice cut prime rib prepared to your specifications. Served alongside buttery mashed potatoes.

  • Tropical Chicken

Slow-roasted chicken breast with Parmesan and a savory mango-pineapple chutney atop rice.

SAT – FEB 11 – “GLASS BOTTOM BOAT – CRACKER VILLAGE – SILVER RIVER MUSEUM” – Silver Springs

Activity Level: 3

Glass Bottom Boats have wowed visitors to Silver Springs since the 1870s with breathtaking views of underwater life and the many springs that feed the Silver River. Take a tour aboard one of our historic Glass Bottom Boats and marvel at the beauty and sheer size of Mammoth Spring, the river’s head spring. You’ll explore many other beautiful feeder springs and see countless species of fish, ancient Native American and Spanish artifacts and even underwater movie props from the days when Hollywood productions flourished at the park!

The Cracker Village is a replica of a 19th century pioneer settlement. Discover what life was like at the turn of the century in the Florida “piney woods.”  This collection of buildings represents a small “Cracker” settlement dating to the 1890s. A typical homestead of the time would have included a cabin and outbuildings such as a barn, pantry, smokehouse, and outhouse. Schoolhouses, churches, and blacksmith shops would have been found in settlements that homesteaders visited to attend social gatherings and barter for supplies.

The Silver River Museum is comprised of two exhibit areas. The Main Museum features exhibits related to Florida geology, paleontology, archaeology, and natural history. The History Wing’s exhibits pertain to Marion County and Florida history. Enjoy lunch (OYO) at the Springside Restaurant. Have a sweet tooth? Visit Paradise Treats for some yummy handmade fudge or a scoop or two of our hand dipped ice cream.

SUN – FEB 12 – “ALWAYS… PATSY CLINE” The Players Performing Arts Center – Sarasota

Activity Level: 3

More than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963.  The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tone in 1961, and continued some correspondence with Cline until her death.

The musical play, complete with down home country humor and true emotion includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight…and many more.  The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS…Patsy Cline”

“Always…Patsy Cline” has enjoyed enormous success all over the United States, including a successful run off-Broadway.  It has been one of the most produced musicals in America according to American Theatre Magazine and has also been enjoyed internationally by audiences in Canada, the UK and Australia.

After the show we will head over to St Armands Circle for dinner (OYO). With more than a dozen fine restaurants serving everything from classic Cuban to Irish, Italian, and continental cuisine. We do recommend making your dinner Reservations, in advance, at one of the many fine Circle restaurants.

THURS – MAR 23 – “THE DINING ROOM” – Just For Laughs Dinner Theatre – Largo

Activity Level: 2

The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for all special occasions. The action is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities, and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother’s infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn’t recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor, and abundant humanity.

TUES – MAR 28 – JAY LENO – Van Wezel – Sarasota

Leno forged a reputation as one of the busiest performers in comedy; for years he booked more than 300 appearances annually. He also became famous for his clean, observational brand of humor and a cartoon-like facial features, which he referred to in the title of his 1996 autobiography, Leading With My Chin

As a student in grade school, Leno displayed his comic tendencies with pranks and practical jokes. His fifth-grade teacher’s report card comments — “if Jay spent as much time studying as he does trying to be a comedian, he’d be a big star” — turned out to be prophetic.

After doing stand-up comedy for years, he became the host of NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2009.  Leno returned to hosting The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010.  He hosted his last episode of this second tenure on February 6, 2014.  That year he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.  Since 2014, he has hosted Jay Leno’s Garage and he has returned to his roots of doing stand-up comedy.

Activity Level:

Once upon a time Martians and Venusians met, fell in love, and had happy relationships together because they respected and accepted their differences. Then they came to Earth and amnesia set in: they forgot they were from different planets.  Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus is based on the book written by American author and relationship counselor John Gray. The book states that most common relationship problems between men and women are a result of fundamental psychological differences between the sexes, one example is men’s complaint that if they offer solutions to problems that women bring up in conversation, the women are necessarily interested in solving those problems, but mainly want to talk about them. Thirty years after its release, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus remains one of the most read and most-cited books about relationships. Now it’s also a hilarious one-man         presentation combining theater and stand-up comedy. Couples are sure to recognize themselves in anecdotes that are both hilarious and familiar. Subjects include Mars and Venus in the bedroom so leave the kids at home.
