MON – FEB 7 – “SOUTH PACIFIC” – Yorkey Theatre – Lakeland

Activity Level: 2

A classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book “Tales of the South Pacific.” – On a South Pacific Island during World War II, Ensign Nellie Forbush, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with French planter Emile de Becque. When Nellie learns that the mother of Emile’s children was an island native, she refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage, unable to overcome the prejudices with which she was raised. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable falls in love with a Tonkinese girl named Liat, but he, too, denies himself a future due to the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile accompanies Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe’s life, Nellie chooses to embrace a future with Emile and his children, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices. As poignant today as it was during its first Broadway run in 1949, the critically acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning musical was bolstered by critical acclaim box-office success, becoming the second-longest-running production on the Great White Way (at the time). Now songbook standards, tunes like “Bali Ha’I”, and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair”, punctuate the tropical tale about the war-torn prejudice and romance that blossoms between U.S Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile De Becque. When Nellie discovers Emile has two mixed-race children, she must decide if her judgment of Emile outweighs her deep love for him.

Avon Park -Nestled in a quiet corner of Florida’s Heartland, The Hotel Jacaranda is the picture of Southern repose. In years gone by, the Jacaranda played hostess to the likes of Babe Ruth and Clark Gable.

As a true example of living history, The Hotel Jacaranda is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in Highlands County. When the Hotel Jacaranda opened in 1926, it took its name from a 150-year-old jacaranda tree that had been removed to make way for the hotel. Among its first guests were members of the St. Louis Cardinals, who came to Avon Park for spring training from 1927 to 1929. Photos of its famous guests, from Babe Ruth to Hollywood celebrities George Burns and Gracie Allen, adorn its hallways. During World War II, the grand hotel played a hand in the war effort by housing hundreds of servicemen who had come to the area to train as military pilots.

In 1988, the South Florida State College Foundation, Inc., purchased the Hotel Jacaranda with an eye toward preserving its historic character. As part of that ongoing effort, the Foundation has undertaken a major restorative project that is returning a street-level business mall to its original design. Through a partnership with South Florida State College, culinary students perfect their talents by training in the Hotel Jacaranda’s modern kitchen.

TUES – MAY 17 – MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT – FORD’S GARAGE (OYO)

Activity Level 3

St. Petersburg – Emerging at the end of the Victorian era in England, the Arts and Crafts movement was fueled by anxieties about the quality of life in the industrial era and the rise of mass-produced goods. Arts and Crafts designers sought to reform both decorative design and daily life, creating objects that were beautiful and functional. In America, the Arts and Crafts movement spread across the country from 1890-1930. The tenets of the movement – simplicity in design, honesty in materials, hand craftsmanship, and depicting the natural world – are still widely valued today.

Most of the works on display at MAACM are on loan from the collection of the Two Red Roses Foundation. Consisting of more than 2,000 objects related to the American Arts and Crafts movement, the collection represents the full range of decorative and fine arts produced by individual artists, craftsmen, and companies of the period c.1890-1930. There are outstanding, rare, and one-of-a-kind examples of furniture, pottery, ceramic tiles and architectural faience, metalwork, woodblocks, fine art, lighting, textiles, and leaded glass, created c.1890-1930. The collection also includes remarkable photographs and photogravures from noted artists of the Pictorialist movement and Photo-Secession.

We will explore the galleries with a knowledgeable docent on a tour of the museum’s collection. There will be time to explore on your own after the tour.

A lunch stop after our visit to the Museum at Ford’s Garage in St. Petersburg (OYO) is your neighborhood burger and beer joint, where everyone is welcome. Ford’s Garage will give you the vibe of being in a 1920’s service station to include vintage Ford vehicles, gas pumps, and fixtures. Our bars feature prohibition-style elements of old brick, rich wood, and a hand-hammered copper bar top. Many more unique features, too numerous to list, really make the Garage a fun place to visit and take pictures!
