TUES – OCT 11 – SOLOMON’S CASTLE – Ona

Activity Level: 2

In 1972, Solomon began building his castle in a swamp in Ona, Florida. The artist built the castle out of aluminum printing plates discarded from the local newspaper. Besides the usual castle amenities—bell tower, dungeon, moat, and drawbridge–the castle has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and ninety stained glass windows.

While there is not much else in Ona, FL, the castle has gained a lot of attention over the past forty plus years. It has appeared on CNN, HGTV’s ‘Extreme Homes’, and in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.
The castle was more than a home to Solomon. It is an ever-changing gallery of his artwork.  Solomon created hundreds of pieces for you to enjoy. You do not need to be an art connoisseur to admire a Solomon sculpture. All you need is a pair of eyes and a sense of humor.

Like the castle, Solomon created his artwork from discarded items. On your visit, you will see cans, bike gears, automotive parts, and other ‘parts’ made up in ways you have never imagined. His artwork includes “The Car with a V-8 engine”; “Evil Kornevil”, a motorcycle made from automotive parts; and “Jeb the Bushman”, an elephant made from oil drums.

THURS – OCT 20 – A CHORUS LINE – Broadway Palms Dinner Theatre – Ft. Myers

Activity Level: 2

The 1975 musical with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and a book by James Kirkwood jr. and Nicholas Dante, A Chorus Line examines one day in the lives of seventeen dancers, all vying for a spot in the “chorus line” of a Broadway musical. After the first round of cuts, Zach, the director, and choreographer, asks each dancer to speak about themselves. Discomfort opens into revelation, confession leads to redemption, and within the bright, outwardly homogenous chorus, the audience begins to see each dancer’s individuality. From Cassie, the star who just needs the “music and the mirror and the chance to dance,” to Val, a small-town girl with a brand-new big-town body, to Mike, who took his sister’s place in dance class, saying “I can do that.” Based on real Broadway dancers’ stories, as told to fellow dancer and choreographer Michael Bennett, A Chorus Line is funny, heartbreaking, and refreshingly honest.  Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre’s award-winning buffet (included) and dazzling Broadway musicals, featuring a live orchestra.

SUN – NOV 6 – ST. JOHNS RIVERSHIP “BARBARA LEE” LUNCH CRUISE – Sanford

Activity Level: 2

A century ago, the St. Johns River was Florida’s first great inland highway connecting the ocean port of Jacksonville with the still-wild interior.  The river ship Barbara-Lee takes you back to a more adventurous, more romantic time.  The river ship Barbara-Lee is an authentic sternwheeler paddleboat. The steel hull is propelled by two paddlewheels at the rear of the vessel. The wheels can turn forward or backward independently of each other, allowing the ship to maneuver easily in very tight quarters. The ship has five decks: An open-air top deck, a covered open-air “paddlewheel deck” overlooking the wheels, an enclosed upper deck that seats 60 diners with its own dance floor, a mezzanine deck that seats 40 and the large main salon deck that seats 84 with its stage, dance floor and bar.  The enclosed dining areas are climate controlled with air conditioning and heating.

In addition to the open upper deck with benches and railings, the covered paddlewheel deck at the rear of the second level allows guests to stay out of the sun while getting an unobstructed view of the river and its wildlife.

It is hands-down the funniest relationship show you will ever see, taking audiences on a provocative and uproariously funny journey through the gender gap.  Dubac has built the show not around what men and women do right (or wrong) but around the more starling truth that confuse both sexes as they try to maintain a new order of balance.  On a quest to answer the age-old question, “What do women want?” Robert Dubac seamlessly transforms himself into five hysterical boneheads who each offer sidesplitting advice on how to straddle the gender gap – all while drinking a beer.  Buffet lunch included prior to the performance and table served dessert during intermission.  Additional charge for some beverages.

FRI – DEC 2 – “ST. ARMANDS HOLIDAY NIGHT OF LIGHTS” – St. Armands Circle – Sarasota

Activity Level: 2

Holiday Night of Lights carries on an annual Sarasota tradition that began over 35 years ago. Sarasota Academy of the Arts students will be performing pre-tree lighting beginning at 5:30pm.

This “must attend” holiday extravaganza continues with a Christmas carol sing-along marking the official arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus—in their very own special sleigh—escorted by Sarasota’s police and fire departments.

The lighting of the circle’s magnificent 51-foot, five-story, Christmas tree – the largest on Florida’s Gulf Coast—will take place shortly after Santa arrives; its 40,000 lights and 800 Christmas bulbs will come vividly to life as Santa “flips the switch” and turns St. Armands Circle into a glittering tropical wonderland.  Immediately following the tree lighting ceremony, Santa will be available for visits and photos with the young—and young-at-heart.

The sounds of traditional holiday music, as well as dance performances, will add to the festivities. Many musical groups will perform throughout the evening—from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.—at various locations throughout the circle.  Enjoy holiday entertainment, special store promotions and gracious hospitality provided by our many shops and restaurants. Visit the live nativity scene at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church.

With more than a dozen fine restaurants (see attached flyer) serving everything from classic Cuban to Irish, Italian, and continental cuisine, this is an extremely popular event, we do recommend making your dinner (OYO) Reservations in advance.

THURS – JAN 26 – HYPROV: IMPROV UNDER HYPNOSIS – Mahaffey Theatre

Activity Level: 2

From the minds of improv and comedy legend Colin Mochrie and Master Hypnotist Asad Mecci comes a brand new, mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, side-splitting show.

Hypnosis and Improv — two art forms that have mystified and entertained fans, skeptics, and everyone in between for decades worldwide – come together as two masters of their crafts unite for a unique comedy experience, HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis.

How it Works: Twenty random volunteers from the audience will be put under hypnosis by Master Hypnotist Asad Mecci (the process of which is a show in its own right), their inhibitions evaporated and their minds no longer their own. The contestants are methodically and hysterically whittled down until five are left on stage when one of the world’s leading improvisers enters! Co-Creator Colin Mochrie takes the stage to improvise with the top five while they are still under hypnosis, turning the show into an improv extravaganza!

In the hands of two masters, and solely crafted from the audience’s uninhibited subconscious, this will be an entirely original and completely unforgettable theatrical experience, for who knows where the unconscious mind will go…

Activity Level: 2

The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz; its plot begins before and continues after Dorothy arrives in Oz from Kansas and includes several references to the 1939 film and Baum’s novel. Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (whose name later changes to Glinda the Good Witch), who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and Elphaba’s private fall from grace.

From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED—the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story that USA Today cheers are “a complete triumph! An original musical that will make you laugh, cry, and think.”

In July 2017, Wicked surpassed The Phantom of the Opera as Broadway’s second-highest grossing musical, trailing only The Lion King and just recently became the 5th longest running Broadway show.
